SC 01Overview

What it does

Describe a script project (a feature, series, pilot or novel adaptation) and the agent applies the matching skills: premise and theme, story structure, character conflict, dialogue, scene craft and format, plus series skills for engines, bibles, writers' room practice and sitcoms. A workflow skill sequences the stages and records decisions in a story-bible.md file, so a later session can resume where the last one stopped. Further skills cover American, Japanese, Korean/French and mainland-Chinese practice and the business side, with case studies from published scripts and plays such as Succession, Chekhov and Ozu; four more skills on Chinese opera are not listed here. The skill bodies are written in Chinese, while replies follow the language of your question.

SC 02Install

How to install it

  • 01From the README

The install command quoted from the repository README.

    /plugin marketplace add jtydhr88/screenwriting-skills /plugin install screenwriting@screenwriting-skills
  • 02skills CLI, for Claude Code, Codex and others

The open skills CLI from Vercel Labs installs a skill from a GitHub repo into the folder each agent expects. It asks which skills and which agents you want, and it installs for the current project unless you add the -g flag, which installs for your user account. Add --list to see what a repo contains before you install anything.

  • 03Claude Code, skills folder

Copy the skill's folder, the one that holds SKILL.md, into ~/.claude/skills/ to use it in every project on your machine, or into .claude/skills/ in a repository to use it there and share it by committing it. Claude Code picks up changes to these folders during a session. If the folder did not exist when the session started, run /reload-skills.

  • 04Claude Code, plugin marketplace

Some repos publish a plugin marketplace, a .claude-plugin/marketplace.json file. Add it in Claude Code, then install a plugin from it with /plugin install plugin-name@marketplace-name. Plugins can bundle hooks and MCP servers along with skills, so read the details panel before you confirm.

    /plugin marketplace add jtydhr88/screenwriting-skills
  • 05Codex, skills folder or $skill-installer

Codex reads skills from .agents/skills in your working folder and its parent folders up to the repository root, and from $HOME/.agents/skills for every repository. Copy the skill's folder into one of them, or run $skill-installer inside Codex and ask it to install from the repo. Codex detects new skills automatically and needs a restart only if one does not appear.

The first command is quoted from the author's README. The others are the standard ways to install a skill from a GitHub repository. They are templates and may not apply here, for example if the repo has no plugin marketplace, so follow the README first.

SC 03Guide

How to get the most from it

Good for

  • Developing a feature, pilot or series from a premise through structure, characters and scenes, with each stage tied to a named skill.
  • Planning a long series: testing whether an engine can carry many episodes, building the character web and drafting bible and pitch documents.
  • Adapting a novel or IP into a 30–50 episode mainland-China drama, including the document chain from idea to script and the filing and review steps.
  • Diagnosing an existing draft with the checklists for structure, character, dialogue, scenes and format.

Watch out for

  • Aimed at long-form film, television and streaming writing. The author states that short vertical dramas and AI comic-dramas are not covered, so hook and pacing rules for those need other sources.
  • Skill bodies are in Chinese. The agent answers in your language, but you can only audit the instructions themselves if you read Chinese.
  • MIT covers the skills only; quoted source material stays with its rights holders. Four of the 26 skills deal with Chinese opera, which most screen projects will not need.

Typical workflow

01Step
Install the plugin from the marketplace (or copy the skill folders into your skills directory), then run /skills to confirm they are listed.
02Step
Start a script project. The workflow skill looks for story-bible.md in the project folder and, for a project that will span sessions, creates one and records the project type, length and entry path (feature, series, adaptation or short).
03Step
Work stage by stage: premise and theme, structure, characters and conflict, then a scene list. For a series, the engine and bible come before the pilot.
04Step
Write the draft with the dialogue and format skills, then run each skill's diagnostic checklist against it.
05Step
At the end of each session the bible is updated with decisions and a one-line next step, so you can resume later.
